Take a look at things you should look for when buying a travel insurance policy.

Travel Insurance is that one travel-related purchase that everybody hates paying for.  Air tickets, although far more expensive, muster a sense of excitement to the point that you can skip out of the travel agent shouting "yippee!"  Travel insurance, on the other hand, is a pain that many people try and avoid, but having a good travel insurance policy for your trip could save you big bucks in the end.

The chances of needing to see a doctor a few times, damaging your camera or losing your iPod on the beach are probably relatively high on an extended trip, so a decent travel insurance policy could come in handy.  And that's without considering the prospect of swimming with sharks in South Africa, riding mopeds in Vietnam or bungee-jumping in New Zealand.

Things to look out for when buying a travel insurance policy are:

- Does it cover specific adventure/high risk activities you are considering taking part in on your trip?

- If it does cover specific adventure/high risk activities - what precautions does it require you to take for you to be covered (e.g. many insurance policies that cover riding on motorbikes and mopeds require you to have a full motorbike licence in your home country).

- How easy/cheap is it to get extra cover for any high risk activities you weren't previously covered for whilst you are on your trip?

- If you are planning to work during your holiday - will you be covered for the type of work you will be doing.  Click here to our partner site for advice on travel insurance for working holidays in Australia.

- If you decide to stay longer, will it be easy to add on extra time to the travel insurance policy whilst you are away?

- If you decide to come back early - will you get refunded for your unused time?
