When you are considering an extended road trip, it can be tricky deciding on whether to do it by car or campervan. Here we look at the pros and cons of travelling by car and by campervan.
Cars An advantage of taking a car is that once you have set up camp or booked into your accommodation, you are free to leave your luggage and drive about wherever you want to go. Campervans are more of an effort in this respect, since you will need to make sure all your luggage and items inside the van are secured away before driving off and you can risk losing your spot at the campsite if you have nothing to mark out or fill your space while you are gone. A car will be much easier to park and cheaper on consumption of fuel than a campervan.
Campervans Whether it's a brightly painted Kombi peace-wagon or miniature house-on-wheels, a campervan will give you the freedom to stop and sleep in relative comfort with none of the hassle of putting up a tent. However, it is necessary to note that many countries do not allow you to sleep in your vehicle (including campervans) away from formal camping facilities so having a van may not necessarily reduce accommodation costs. Although, if you do find free camping, then the benefit is having your own cooking and washing facilities when there are no public facilities and a 'home' to call your own.
