Seasoned traveller, Hanni Zahn, tells us what to do in the USA and what not to do in Vietnam.
Do's Do drive cross-country in the States! The scenery is fantastic, the roads are straight and empty, and of course, with the public transport being so limited you really get the chance to explore the place!
Do get a campervan and drive/camp through Europe! Even though public transport is pretty good in Europe, it'll be much more fun to get off the beaten track and do your own thing. Also, accommodation is a killer in Europe, so you'll save on that!
Do ride a horse, donkey, camel, elephant or any other animal that can legally be ridden! No matter if it's on a Greek island, in the Indian jungle, in the middle of the Sahara, or in the Tibetan/Chinese mountains…it is always a breathtaking way of getting around! You take in the scenery much better and get close to the locals! Just make sure the animal is well-looked after.
Do cycle wherever you can Again, it's a great way to experience the countryside and people around you…and it is cheap;) Don'ts Don't drive a car in Italy, especially not in the South! It is basically suicide…the only traffic rule that exists is that there are no rules!
Don't drive a car in any European (or Asian for that matter) city! Too much traffic, no parking, but a very good public transport system
Don't hitchhike in Greece! You might be lucky and get a lift with a jolly truck-driver, or you might end up getting into serious trouble with some Greek lads! If I were to go again...... ... I would buy a scooter/motorbike to explore Vietnam, rather than following the backpackers' bus-route or use the scooter-taxis.
… I'd charter a boat with a bunch of people and cruise the Mediterranean. It'd be a great laugh and you really would be able to get to all the nice, untouched beaches.
… I'd go camping/cross-country in Europe again and again and again…the variety is just amazing! |
